In 1971, Mr. Smolev became a full-time staff member at Hofstra University. serving as Coordinator of Deferred Giving, a position he held until the middle of 1974 when he entered his law practice full-time.  Mr. Smolev continued his association with Hofstra. He became an adjunct Professor at the Hofstra School of Business, teaching accounting, business law and tax. He also taught Estate Planning at the Hofstra Law School.   Mr. Smolev has written numerous articles for The New York Law Journal and Newsday. He authored the chapter on charitable remainder trusts in the Handbook of Wealth Management. His chapter titled “Estate Planning Client Strategies” has been published in the 2009 Aspatore book, “Inside the Minds: Estate Planning Client Strategies.”    A specialist in all aspects of tax law, corporate law, estate and trust law, and education law, Mr. Smolev has been a long-time member of the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association and the Nassau County Bar Association. He has served on various committees of those Bar Associations. For more than thirty-eight years he has been a member of the New York State Association of School Attorneys, serving that organization in all capacities, including as President in 1984.     From February, 1975 to November, 1998, Mr. Smolev served as Counsel to the North Merrick Union Free School District.      During the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Administration, Mr. Smolev served as a member of the Internal Revenue Service Commissioner's Small Business Advisory Committee. The Committee consisted of approximately twenty members, all tax experts, from different regions of the United States, who met regularly with the Commissioner and his staff to discuss tax policy regarding small business.       Mr. Smolev has lectured on Criminal Tax Fraud for the Chaykin and other professional continuing education programs. Currently, he lectures on that topic at the Washington College of Law of American University.        Mr. Smolev was a member of the Hofstra University Board of Trustees for fourteen years and has served on various foundation and not-for-profit boards, including the Long Island Cabinet for Israeli Bonds and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, where he currently serves as Vice Chair of the Board. He also serves as Vice President and Counsel of the Board of Directors of the New York City Police Museum. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Gurwin Geriatric Foundation. A graduate of Hofstra University, BBA Accounting, 1966, Mr. Smolev earned his law degree from Washington College of Law of the American University, 1969. He received his LLM in Taxation from New York University Graduate School of Law, 1974.
Mr. Smolev began his career at the accounting firm of Peat, Marwick & Mitchell & Co., New York, New York. Subsequent to his tenure at Peat, Marwick & Mitchell & Co., he edited tax related professional texts for Panel Publishers.
